What this tool does

Split a list of people into balanced random teams — by number of teams or by team size. Sizes never differ by more than one person. Everyone is assigned to exactly one team. With 'people per team', a final smaller team is created if the numbers do not divide evenly.

How to use the Random Team Generator

  1. Enter or select people (one per line or comma-separated).
  2. Enter or select split by.
  3. Enter or select teams (or people per team).
  4. Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.

Formula

The list is crypto-shuffled, then dealt round-robin into the teams — dealing a shuffled list is what guarantees team sizes differ by at most one and every split is equally likely.

Worked example

Sample split: eight people split into two teams might come out as Alex, Sam, Robin and Casey against Priya, Jordan, Taylor and Jamie. Generate again and the shuffle deals a completely different pair of teams — sizes always stay balanced at four and four.

Frequently asked questions

After shuffling, people are dealt one at a time to Team 1, Team 2 and so on, like dealing cards. Dealing a shuffled list means the largest and smallest teams can never differ by more than one person.

Use number of teams when the format is fixed (two teams for a match, four for a tournament). Use people per team when the activity needs a set group size, like five-a-side or lab groups of three.

The remainder is dealt out one extra person to the first teams, so with 10 people and 3 teams you get 4, 3 and 3. In team-size mode the last team is simply smaller.

Not directly — the split is fully random. Generate again for a new split, or pre-group people: put a pair on one line as a single entry (e.g. 'Alex + Priya') and they will always land on the same team.

Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored — the draw happens entirely in this browser tab and the list disappears when you close it.
