About these tools

Landscaping materials are sold by volume, weight or bag — and the three rarely line up neatly. These calculators turn the dimensions of a bed, lawn or path into the exact cubic yards, tons or bags you need, so you can order once and avoid a second delivery fee.

Every tool supports imperial and metric units. Material weights use typical loose densities stored in one reference file; moisture and particle size change real weights by about 10%, so round up when ordering by the ton.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert square feet to cubic yards?

Multiply square feet by depth in inches, then divide by 324. 100 sq ft at 3 in is 0.93 cubic yards.

Should I order bulk or bagged materials?

Bags make sense under about 2 cubic yards. Above that, bulk delivery is usually cheaper even with a delivery fee.

How much extra material should I order?

Add 5–10% for uneven ground and spillage; add 15–25% for fill that will be compacted.

Why do yards and tons give different answers?

Materials differ in density: a yard of lava rock weighs about half a ton, a yard of crushed stone about 1.35 tons.

Do these tools work for metric measurements?

Yes. Switch to metric to enter meters and centimeters; results show cubic meters and tonnes.
