What this tool does
Generate random letters of the alphabet — uppercase, lowercase or mixed — for word games, classroom activities, codes and creative prompts. The 26-letter English alphabet. 'Vowels' means A, E, I, O, U (Y is counted as a consonant here).
How to use the Random Letter Generator
- Enter or select letters to generate.
- Enter or select case.
- Enter or select alphabet.
- Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.
Formula
Each letter is an independent uniform cryptographic draw from the chosen alphabet set, then cased as selected. Independent draws mean letters can repeat, just like letter tiles drawn with replacement.

Worked example
Sample draw: a single uppercase letter might come out as Q. Ask for seven lowercase letters and you might get m, t, a, r, e, s, p — letters are drawn independently, so repeats like a double E are possible and normal.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. Each letter is drawn independently, like rolling a 26-sided die — repeats are expected over longer runs. In a run of 10 letters, seeing at least one repeat is more likely than not.
Generate one uppercase letter — the classic use is Scattergories-style games, alphabet warm-ups and 'name something beginning with…' prompts, where one fair letter starts the round.
A, E, I, O and U. Y is treated as a consonant for the consonants-only set, following the usual classroom convention.
Yes — crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, so each of the 26 letters has exactly a 1-in-26 chance per draw, with no modulo bias toward early letters.
Not with a custom exclusion list — the sets offered are all 26 letters, vowels only or consonants only. For full custom sets, put the letters you want into the Random Name Picker as one-letter entries.
