Frequently asked questions
A typical 3-seat sofa is planned at about 50 cu ft in mover inventories. Sectionals are much larger — measure them and add the difference as buffer.
They use standard inventory volumes per item type (beds, dressers, tables) and sum them, then add air space because furniture never packs perfectly tight.
Rough guide: under 200 cu ft a 10 ft truck, 200–400 a 15–17 ft, 400–650 a 20 ft, and 650–900 a 26 ft truck. Weight limits and awkward shapes can matter more than volume.
Cushions, lamps, boxes and the gaps between irregular pieces typically add 15–25%. The default 20% buffer covers normal packing inefficiency.
Not directly. Movers estimate weight from volume using a density factor (often around 7 lb per cu ft for household goods), but dense loads like books break that rule.
