What this tool does

Estimate how many diapers a baby needs over a period, and the typical diaper size for the baby's weight. Daily rates and size bands are typical published/manufacturer-chart values, labelled as estimates — individual babies vary, and brands size differently. Size up if between bands and the fit is tight.

How to use the Diaper Calculator

  1. Enter or select baby's age band.
  2. Enter or select period (days).
  3. Enter or select baby weight in lb.
  4. Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.

Formula

total diapers = typical diapers per day for the age band × days; size from typical manufacturer weight bands

Frequently asked questions

About 10 per day in the first month is the typical planning figure, dropping to roughly 8 at 1–3 months, 7 at 3–6 months and 5–6 after that. This calculator uses those published typical rates.

At the newborn rate of ~10/day, about 300 for 30 days. Many parents buy smaller packs in two sizes at first, because babies outgrow the newborn size quickly.

Typical manufacturer bands: Newborn up to 10 lb, Size 1 to 14 lb, Size 2 to 18 lb, Size 3 to 28 lb, Size 4 to 37 lb, Size 5 above that. Fit matters more than the label — leaks up the back usually mean size up.

Each manufacturer's chart is its own; the bands here are the widely published typical values. If between sizes, the larger size with a snug leg seal usually works better.

The daily-change counts are the same; cloth users typically wash every 2–3 days, so a stash of about 2–3 days' worth (roughly 20–24 newborn diapers) covers the cycle.
