What this tool does

Calculate daily carbohydrate grams from your calorie target, with the published AMDR range of 45–65% of calories. The Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range for carbohydrate is 45–65% of energy (DRI). Low-carb and ketogenic patterns deliberately sit below it; diabetes carbohydrate targets are set individually by clinicians.

How to use the Carbohydrate Calculator

  1. Enter or select daily calories (kcal).
  2. Enter or select carbohydrate share of calories (%).
  3. Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.

Formula

carb grams = calories × carb% / 4; AMDR range shown at 45% and 65% of calories (Dietary Reference Intakes)

Worked example

For carbohydrate calculator, the following measurements illustrate the exact method: Daily calories (kcal): 2000; Carbohydrate share of calories (%): 50.

  • Daily calories (kcal)2000
  • Carbohydrate share of calories (%)50

Result

  • Carbohydrate (g/day)250
  • AMDR low end — 45% (g/day)225
  • AMDR high end — 65% (g/day)325

Frequently asked questions

The published AMDR is 45–65% of calories: at 2,000 kcal that is 225–325 g/day. Your own target depends on activity, goals and health — enter any percentage to see the grams.

Multiply calories by the percentage, then divide by 4 (carbohydrate provides about 4 kcal per gram). 2,000 kcal at 50% → 1,000 kcal → 250 g.

The DRI also lists an RDA of 130 g/day for adults, based on average glucose use by the brain. AMDR percentages exceed it at typical calorie levels; very-low-carb diets go below it deliberately, since the body can make glucose.

Fibre is carbohydrate on labels but yields less usable energy and is counted within the totals here. Net-carb approaches subtract fibre; this AMDR-based tool does not.

There is no single prescribed percentage; diabetes guidance individualises carbohydrate targets. Use this for arithmetic only and set the target with your care team.
