What this tool does
Calculate a pitcher's WHIP — walks plus hits per inning pitched — from hits, walks and innings. Enter fractional innings as outs, not decimals: 5.1 in a box score means 5 innings and 1 out, which is entered as 5 whole innings and 1 out.
How to use the WHIP Calculator
- Enter or select hits allowed.
- Enter or select walks allowed.
- Enter or select whole innings pitched.
- Enter or select additional outs (0, 1 or 2).
- Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.
Formula
WHIP = (walks + hits) ÷ innings pitched, where innings pitched = whole innings + additional outs ÷ 3

Frequently asked questions
League-average WHIP is around 1.30. Below 1.20 is strong, below 1.10 is elite, and the best modern seasons finish under 1.00. Above 1.40 usually means too many baserunners.
120 hits plus 30 walks is 150 baserunners over 150 innings — exactly one per inning, so WHIP = 150 ÷ 150 = 1.00.
No. WHIP counts only hits and walks (unintentional plus intentional). Hit-by-pitches, errors and dropped third strikes put runners on but are excluded from the classic WHIP formula.
Baseball writes a third of an inning as .1 and two thirds as .2 — those are outs, not tenths. This calculator takes whole innings plus a separate outs field so 150.1 is entered as 150 innings and 1 out.
They measure different things: WHIP counts baserunners allowed and is less affected by sequencing luck and defence, while ERA counts actual runs. Analysts often use WHIP alongside FIP to judge a pitcher.
