What this tool does

Rate a D&D 5e encounter's difficulty from party level, party size, monster XP and monster count. Uses the D&D 5e SRD encounter-building rules (released under open licence terms). Adjusted XP is only for judging difficulty — characters earn the unadjusted total. Lair actions, terrain and monster synergies are not captured by XP math.

How to use the D&D Encounter XP Calculator

  1. Enter or select party size (characters).
  2. Enter or select average party level (1–20).
  3. Enter or select number of monsters.
  4. Enter or select total monster xp (unadjusted).
  5. Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.

Formula

adjusted XP = total monster XP × encounter multiplier for the monster count (1 monster ×1, 2 ×1.5, 3–6 ×2, 7–10 ×2.5, 11–14 ×3, 15+ ×4; shifted one step for parties under 3 or over 5 characters), compared against the party's summed XP thresholds from the SRD encounter-building table

Frequently asked questions

The multiplier exists only to rate difficulty — many monsters are more dangerous than their raw XP suggests because action economy multiplies their threat. Awards always use the unadjusted total, split among the party.

Adjusted XP at or above the party's Deadly threshold (per-character threshold × party size). Deadly means a real chance of a character death — not that a TPK is expected every time.

The SRD shifts the multiplier one step up for parties of 1–2 (fewer actions to spread monster attacks over) and one step down for parties of 6+ (more actions and focus fire). This calculator applies that shift.

No — experienced groups with full resources often handle Deadly encounters, and boss fights are usually built there. It is a budgeting label, not a prohibition; context like rest state and terrain matters.

The thresholds and multipliers here are the classic 5e SRD encounter-building rules. Later revisions re-present XP budgets; if your table uses those, compare against their budget figures instead.
