What this tool does
Estimate muriatic acid to lower pool pH or soda ash to raise it, scaled by pool volume and the pH change wanted. pH dosing constants are labelled estimates from published pool-care rules of thumb; pH response is buffered and non-linear, so always dose in parts and re-test. Follow product labels and safety instructions.
How to use the Pool pH Calculator
- Enter or select pool volume in gal.
- Enter or select direction.
- Enter or select current ph.
- Enter or select target ph.
- Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.
Formula
lower: muriatic acid 31.45% (fl oz) ≈ gallons ÷ 10,000 × (current − target) ÷ 0.1 × 8; raise: soda ash (oz wt) ≈ gallons ÷ 10,000 × (target − current) ÷ 0.2 × 6 — labelled estimates

Worked example
For pool ph calculator, the following measurements illustrate the exact method: Pool volume: 15000; Direction: lower; Current pH: 7.8; Target pH: 7.5.

Frequently asked questions
Labelled estimate used here: about 8 fl oz (1 cup) of 31.45% muriatic acid per 10,000 gallons lowers pH by roughly 0.1. The true acid demand depends strongly on your total alkalinity and borates, so dose in parts and re-test.
Published-rule estimate: about 6 oz (by weight) of soda ash (sodium carbonate) per 10,000 gallons raises pH by roughly 0.2 when alkalinity is in the normal range. Soda ash also raises alkalinity somewhat.
pH is logarithmic and buffered — the same acid dose moves pH far less in a high-alkalinity pool than a low-alkalinity one. No volume-only formula can be exact, which is why this tool labels its constants as estimates and advises split doses.
7.4–7.6 is the usual target band: comfortable for eyes, kind to equipment, and where chlorine works efficiently.
Never mix chemicals, add acid to water (never water to acid) in a bucket if pre-diluting, pour in front of a return jet with the pump running, wear eye protection, and wait a full circulation before re-testing.
