What this tool does
Calculate the calcium chloride dose to raise calcium hardness for your pool volume and product type. Dosing constants from published calcium dosing charts: ≈8 ppm per lb per 10,000 gal for 77% calcium chloride, ≈11 ppm for anhydrous.
How to use the Pool Calcium Hardness Calculator
- Enter or select pool volume in gal.
- Enter or select calcium chloride product.
- Enter or select current calcium hardness (ppm).
- Enter or select target calcium hardness (ppm).
- Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.
Formula
calcium chloride (lb) = gallons ÷ 10,000 × (target − current) ÷ ppm per lb per 10,000 gal (8 ppm for 77% product, 11 ppm anhydrous)
- volume
- Pool volume (gal, before metric conversion)
- product
- Calcium chloride product
- current
- Current calcium hardness (ppm)
- target
- Target calcium hardness (ppm)
Dosing constants from published calcium dosing charts: ≈8 ppm per lb per 10,000 gal for 77% calcium chloride, ≈11 ppm for anhydrous.
Worked example
For pool calcium hardness calculator, the following measurements illustrate the exact method: Pool volume: 15000; Calcium chloride product: 77; Current calcium hardness (ppm): 200; Target calcium hardness (ppm): 300.
Inputs
- Pool volume15000 gal
- Calcium chloride product77% (dihydrate, typical pool product)

Frequently asked questions
Published dosing charts: 1 lb of calcium chloride per 10,000 gallons raises calcium hardness by about 8 ppm for the common 77% (dihydrate) product and about 11 ppm for anhydrous product. Pick your product type and the dose scales with volume and ppm needed.
Common ranges: 200–400 ppm for plaster/concrete, 175–225 ppm often suggested for vinyl and fibreglass. Very low calcium makes water aggressive to plaster; very high invites scale.
Check the product label: most pool calcium increaser is calcium chloride dihydrate at about 77% CaCl₂; some industrial product is anhydrous (94–97%). The percentage changes the Ca delivered per pound, which is why the tool asks.
Pre-dissolve in a bucket of pool water in batches (it gets hot), pour around the perimeter with the pump running, and never add it at the same time or place as soda ash or bicarbonate — they react and cloud the water.
No practical additive lowers it; dilution with lower-calcium fill water is the fix. This tool only calculates additions.
