What this tool does

Count patio pavers from area and paver size, with a pattern waste allowance. Joint width is conservatively ignored (sand joints are filled, not covered by extra pavers). Herringbone and border-heavy designs need the upper end of the waste range.

How to use the Paver Calculator

  1. Enter or select length in ft.
  2. Enter or select width in ft.
  3. Enter or select paver size.
  4. Enter or select pattern / cutting waste (%).
  5. Read the calculated result; change any measurement to compare alternatives.

Formula

paver face area: 4×8 = 0.222, 6×6 = 0.25, 6×9 = 0.375, 12×12 = 1 sq ft; pavers = ceil(area / face × (1 + waste/100))

Frequently asked questions

A 4 × 8 in paver covers 32 sq in, so 4.5 pavers make a square foot. A 100 sq ft patio needs 450 pavers before waste.

Use 10–15%: the 45° pattern cuts nearly every edge paver. Running bond on a square patio can be as low as 5%.

At 6 × 9 in (0.375 sq ft each), 100 sq ft needs 267 pavers, or about 294 with 10% waste.

Borders use the same pavers laid on edge or in a contrasting colour — they are inside the area count, but order the border colour as its own quantity.

Compacted gravel base, bedding sand, edge restraints and jointing sand — the Paver Base Calculator sizes the base and sand layers.
